Man who spat in face of police officer is warned he could be jailed

1 Mins read

A MAN who spat in the face of a police officer has been warned he could go to jail.

Cathair McKendry (21), formerly with an address at Mill Street in Cushendall but now of Carrowcrin Road near Armoy, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on September 23.

A prosecutor said that on June 11, 2018, police were called to a road traffic incident in the Lodge Road/Adelaide Avenue area of Coleraine and McKendry became aggressive and swore at officers.

He began to resist and as he was being put in a police car he struck out with his leg kicking an officer four or five times, spat in his face and attempted to bite his finger.
The defendant was also “messing about” in a police cell van and at Coleraine’s Causeway Hospital he assaulted a police officer.

McKendry admitted charges including driving whilst unfit; being disorderly; assaulting police officers and resisting an officer.

District Judge Peter King adjourned sentencing for a pre-sentence report and imposed an interim driving disqualification on McKendry who had a previous record.
The judge told the defendant: “Your liberty is at risk”.
