Man who stole purse from barber shop used bank card in attempt to pay £67 taxi fare

A MAN who stole a purse from a barber shop later used a bank card in an attempt to pay £67 for a taxi from Ballycastle to Ballymena and back.

Details emerged regarding Dale McKee, formerly with an address in Ballymena, but now living at Broombeg View in Ballycastle.

The defendant was charged with theft of a purse; fraudulently using a bank card from the purse and attempting to use the bank card in other transactions.

A prosecutor said on a date in September a woman was at BeBop Barber shop in Castle Street in Ballycastle when a person came in and made an appointment in the name of McKee.

A short time later she noticed her purse was missing It contained £20 in cash and bank cards.

She cancelled her bank cards using a phone app and when she also phoned her bank they said one one had been used to book a taxi at a cost of £67 and payment had been attempted twice at a shop in Ballycastle but had been declined as she had cancelled the card.

CCTV from the shop showed the defendant.

Coleraine Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena on Monday, was told after being contacted the taxi company cancelled the fare enroute and refunded the payment to the woman.

Police had been looking for McKee and he was eventually arrested at Antrim Courthouse.

Defence solicitor David Nagra asked for the case to be adjourned to Wednesday.

District Judge Peter King said he would not need a Probation report.

He added: “I know Mr McKee and the generations of his family so well I could probably write the report myself”.
