A MAN who was disorderly in the vicinity of Barry’s Amusements at Castle Erin Road in Portrush and who assaulted a police officer has been fined £350.
Gavin Duffy (43), of Cloonavin Green, Coleraine, came to police attention in the early hours of March 9 this year.
A prosecutor said police were called in connection with a “concern for safety” and found the defendant was under the influence of alcohol and he refused all offers of assistance and was verbally abusive.
When he was informed he was being detained under the ‘Mental Health Order’ he lashed out at police and had to be restrained. In a police vehicle he kicked out and made repeated attempts to headbutt a window.
When later cautioned he said: “I do apologise”.
A defence solicitor said police were “only doing their job” and the defendant had acted “wholly inappropriately” and it had been an episode where the “wheels came off”.
