Man who was eating Chinese meal in ‘badly parked’ car was over the limit

A pensioner who was “badly parked” whilst eating a Chinese meal was then found to have been over the limit.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday Peter Logue (69), of Mountsandel Road, Coleraine, was fined £200 and banned from the road for 12 months after pleading guilty to being in charge of a motor vehicle while more than twice the legal drink-drive limit.

The court heard how police had been alerted on July 30 this year in the town’s Knocklynn Road area.

Logue’s vehicle was spotted badly parked and he was found in the driver’s seat, eating a Chinese meal.

The defendant was arrested and an evidential breath sample recorded a reading of 72 micrograms – the legal alcohol drink-drive limit is 35.

He told the court: “I had been ill with a bad chest infection; on the day after I was apprehended I was admitted to hospital and kept there for eight days. My licence is important to me.”

He added: “I was feeling very depressed and I stupidly resorted to drinks of wine.”

District Judge Peter King certified Logue for the drink-driving course and he told him to pay a £15 offender levy.
