Man with ‘miserable record’ had heroin

A MAN who a judge said had “a miserable record” has been put on Probation for a year for possessing a heroin wrap.

Patrick Joseph Stephen O’Kane (30), previously with an address in Ballycastle but who is now living at Stonard Street in Moneymore, was caught with the Class A drug in November last year.

He appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday where District Judge Liam McNally noted that in the past he had given the defendant jail sentences and suspended custody which hadn’t “hindered” the addiction or offending.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said the defendant is on a heroin substitute programme.

The judge put O’Kane on Probation in the hope it would assist in getting to grips with his addiction.
