Mayor Mark Fielding praises emergency services

The Mayor of Causeway Coast & Glens Mark Fielding has praised the emergency services involved in the rescue at Portnahapple in Portstewart on Wednesday evening.

Coastguard teams from Coleraine and Ballycastle, the ambulance service, the PSNI and Portrush RNLI went to the scene at shortly after 8.30pm following reports that a man had fallen onto rocks.

An RNLI spokesman said: “On arrival on scene it was established that a young male had fallen approximately 30 feet onto rocks near Portnahapple.

A PSNI spokesman added: “At around 8.30 pm on Wednesday police received a report that a man had fallen from a cliff path near Port Na Happle, Portstewart.

“Officers attended and closed part of the path to help facilitate our colleagues in the NIAS and Coastguard who rescued the male, who was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries”.

Mayor Mark Fielding said “I welcome the news that the casualty was recovered, pleased that a fatal tragedy has been avoided and I praise all the emergency services involved in the rescue.”
