Councillor William McCandless has raised a number of concerns after attending Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors annual parade in Rasharkin on Friday.
The Ulster Unionist Councillor said : “I was invited along as an observer to the Rasharkin parade on Fri. 19/8. I was impressed by the decorum of all the bands on parade. They appeared to observe all the restrictions which were imposed upon them in spite of the abusive language which was hurled at them and the elected Unionist representatives by the “travel to be offended” protesters.”
“I would appeal to the parade commission that this needs to be a condition imposed on the ” protesters ” for future parades that they should be respectful and remain silent when the bands process past them. In a S.F. manifesto I studied it said that “S.F. acknowledges the right to march as a valid expression of political and cultural identity. Equally S.F. recognises the rights of local communities to live free from sectarian harassment, intimidation and triumphalism.”
“Are there not members of the PUL family in Rasharkin who are also entitled to watch Ballymaconnelly process in their village without harassment?”
