Member Of Public Flagged Down Passing Police Patrol After Suspecting Man With Drink Taken Was In Car

A member of the public flagged down a passing police patrol in the harbour area of Portrush and told officers they believed a man in a silver Peugeot car had drink taken.

Officers then spoke to Shaun Dunlop (48), or Ramore Street in Portrush. He was in the driver’s seat of a car with the keys in the ignition and his speech was slurred, Coleraine Magistrates Court was told.

After providing a preliminary breath sample the defendant refused to provide another sample, whilst saying: “You tell me what I’m getting done with”.

The defendant denied driving the car.

At court he pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to provide specimens in connection with the incident on August 22 this year.

Defence solicitor Sam Barr said his client didn’t provide the sample because he initially denied he was driving the car but CCTV footage had then been shown.

Mr Barr said the defendant had been “feeling a bit low” as it was the anniversary of his father’s death and a friend had asked him to go out.

Mr Barr said the defendant then made the “stupid mistake of jumping into vehicle to drive the short distance home”.
The court heard it was the second drink-related conviction in ten years which meant the minimum ban was three years and the defendant was also fined £400.
