Free bagged compost will soon be available across Mid and East Antrim Borough.
Starting on Monday 8 May this will not only mark International Compost Awareness Week but also highlight Mid and East Antrim’s In Bloom campaign – just launched earlier in April.
“International Compost Awareness Week helps Council highlight how food waste is never ‘wasted’ as it is turned into a high quality product – much loved by gardeners and vegetable growers alike,” said the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Audrey Wales MBE.
“Known as ‘Rosey-lea’ the compost is made from organic materials that come exclusively from householders’ brown bin food waste and their grass and hedge clippings.
“Once composted, it is suitable for a wide range of garden uses,” Cllr Wales added.
The initiative is all the more appropriate as the 2017 Mid and East Antrim In Bloom campaign has just been officially launched – also by Cllr Wales.
“Our ‘In Bloom’ community competitions are a great chance for people to be recognised for their gardening skills,” she said, urging the whole community to get involved.
“Everyone can now also take advantage of this practical help – in the form of our free bagged compost. From Monday 8 May the compost will be available at all Household Recycling Centres in the Borough, but its first come-first served – as the scheme is likely to be very popular again this year,” Mayor Wales cautioned.
The benefits of composting are many – food and garden waste is diverted via the Council’s own Brown Bin scheme away from costly landfill.
This reduces harmful gases entering the environment and saves the ratepayer money as composting is a much cheaper option than landfill.
The free bags will be available from Monday 8 May and throughout International Compost Awareness Week – or as long as stocks last – in Ballymena’s Waveney Road Household Recycling Centre (HRC), Larne’s Redland’s HRC, Larne South HRC and at Glenarm’s HRC and Carrickfergus HRC.
Redlands HRC is located at the first roundabout on the Harbour Highway in Larne; Glenarm HRC is located at Dickeystown Road in Glenarm; Larne South HRC is located at Island Road Lower at Ballycarry and Ballymena HRC is at Waveney Road. Carrickfergus HRC is at Sullatober Lane off Marshallstown Road.
