Tourism Ireland in GB invited Sky Sports to come and film at some of our tourism ‘hotspots’ in Northern Ireland, including on the Causeway Coast, ahead of next week’s Open at Royal Portrush. It’s part of Tourism Ireland’s extensive programme of promotions to shine a spotlight on Northern Ireland around the world and to leverage the tourism benefits of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The footage captured here will be used in various Sky Sports broadcasts from Royal Portrush during The Open next week (Sky Sports has the broadcast rights for all four Majors, including The Open). Millions of people will be watching The Open and Tourism Ireland aims to showcase not only our world-class golf, but also some of the many great things to see and do on a holiday here.
Viewers will see Northern Ireland comedian John Linehan (aka May McFetridge) chatting with golf fans at various locations – including Harry’s Shack in Portstewart, Portstewart Golf Club, the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Magherabuoy House Hotel, the Giant’s Causeway, the Old Bushmills Distillery and Dunluce Castle.
“We’re delighted to partner with Sky Sports, to highlight the Causeway Coast and Northern Ireland to people watching The Open on TV,” said Julie Wakley, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Great Britain. “Our aim is to shine a spotlight on our world-class golf – and also on the spectacular scenery here and the wealth of things to see and do on a holiday in Northern Ireland.”
Julie Wakley continued: “Tourism Ireland is undertaking an extensive programme of promotional activity throughout 2019, to continue to grow visitor numbers to Northern Ireland. Our activity to leverage the tourism benefits of The Open so far has includedl encouraging those attending the event to extend their stay in Northern Ireland, as well as showcasing Northern Ireland as a host of world-class events and, by extension, a superb golf and holiday destination.”
