More support services needed for bereaved parents

Speaking to Causeway Coast Community Claire Sugden MLA said “This Baby Loss Awareness week, I’m calling on the Department of Health, the Trusts and the Public Health Agency to listen to parents and families to find ways of improving antenatal care and services, especially in circumstances of birth trauma and the loss of a child.”

“Losing a baby is one of the most heart breaking experiences anyone can face, it is a loss that stays with families forever. Miscarriage, still birth and the death of a baby remain a hidden grief for so many. The care families receive immediately following the death or loss of their baby can have life-long affects. Nothing can ease their pain, but receiving good care and support at the time can impact how they deal with their grief for the rest of their lives.”

“Our mental health services are severely under-resourced and baby loss, that is so often a private trauma, is one of the forgotten areas of extreme need. We need more services to help parents during this difficult time with better access to timely mental health support.”
