Motorist Was Detected Over Drink Limit Following Incident Involving Tractor

A motorist was involved in an incident with a tractor at the Ballybogey Road near Ballymoney and was then detected over the drink limit.

Andrew Richmond (34), a bricklayer whose address was listed as Darkfort Crescent in Portballintrae, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in his breath.

A charge of careless driving was withdrawn.

Richmond’s Citroen Berlingo vehicle sustained substantial damage but there were no reports of injuries, Coleraine Magistrates Court heard on December 10.

A defence lawyer said the defendant made a “stupid decision” to drive and the incident was “totally out of character”.

The lawyer said Richmond had taken two pints and thought he was below the limit.

He had a reading of 51 with the legal limit being 35.

Banning him for a year along with a £250 fine, District Judge Peter King told the defendant: “You took a chance”.

He added that “two pints” had put the defendant “more than marginally over the limit”.
