Mulholland engages with council on litter in Portstewart

SDLP Portstewart Councillor Angela Mulholland has spoken with council this morning after reports of overfill of litter bins and litter flowing onto the street.

Councillor Mulholland said:

“Council has stated that ‘we have not engaged the wombles this year to minimise the financial impact of COVID-19.

We have a small litter picking crew emptying the litter bins in the main resorts during the morning. People need to be more responsible and take their waste home if the bins are filled. We are exploring larger capacity bins to deal with the issue but council does not have budget to clean up to the normal levels. ‘

Cllr Mulholland stated that this is on top of no toilet facilities being open at the moment and residents are having to witness incidents of people going to the toilet outside their windows. This is totally unacceptable.

“Restrictions should only be lifted when the proper services and facilities are available and open.”
