East Derry SDLP MLA Gerry Mullan has written to the new Infrastructure Minister expressing his disappointment that no safety improvement schemes for the Aigevy Road have been included his Department’s regional plans despite a number of fatal accidents on the road.

Gerry Mullan said, “I and my SDLP colleague Councillor Roisin Loftus have made it clear to local Transport NI representatives that the Agivey Road is one of the most dangerous stretches of the A54, with a high rate of accidents and near misses. Despite this, there have been no safety improvement schemes for the road included in the Department of Infrastructure’s regional plans.

“A number of local residents have contacted me to raise concerns over the excessive speeding on the road. Residents feel unable to pull out of their driveways or from side roads for fear of being involved in a collision.

“They have also said pedestrians and cyclists are at risk when using the road. We have already had two fatalities and if nothing is done we may well see another.

“That is why I have asked the Infrastructure Minister to review the safety measures on the Agivey Road and to make additional funds available to carry out any work required. This must also include liaising with the PSNI to ensure that appropriate police resources are directed to the area.”
