More needs to be done to address bird fouling in residential areas – McGuigan

Philip McGuigan MLA

Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said the issue of bird fouling from overhead power cables has to be tackled.

Mr.McGuigan said:

“This is a seasonal issue which affects a small but not insubstantial amount of citizens.

“I have visited homes in Glenravel, Loughgiel, Dunloy and Portglenone within the last week and it affects both rural and urban dwellers.

“Roofs, windows, cars, gardens and driveways are clarried on a daily basis.

“People are constantly having to power hose their homes and yards as well as cleaning their cars.

“They are unable to hang washing out on a line nor allow children out to play on trampolines or in the garden.

“This issue needs to be addressed in order to preserve public health and safety. NIE should do more to find a reliable solution.

“It is also an issue that should be addressed at planning stage. Underground cables should be used whenever possible and certainly overhead cables should be diverted from going over houses and gardens.”
