North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said that many aspects of society in North Antrim will suffer unless the majority vote for remain in the North is respected.
Speaking in Portglenone Mr. McGuigan said:
“Sinn Féin are determined that a vote in England and Wales does not force the people of the North of Ireland out of the European Union. Whether politically or through the courts we intend to continue to challenge this decision.
“The North is a net beneficiary of EU funds. That is certainly the case in the constituency of North Antrim whether through the result of Peace funding,Rural development grants or the Single farm payment made to all the farmers in this rural constituency.
“Add to this the positive benefit of being part of 1.2 billion Euros of unfettered trade between the North and South of this island every week.
“Does anybody think that an English Tory government will replace these potential lost funds that have a positive benefits to traders in towns like Ballymena, Ballycastle, Ballymoney and everywhere else.
“The EU needs reformed but on the whole it benefits citizens in North Antrim. It also protects workers, women, minorities, disability and human rights.
“The economic, cultural and social damage an EU border would have on the island of Ireland would be huge and can’t be allowed to happen.”
