North Coast Smokehouse talents have no bounds

Ruairidh Morrison and Melanie Brown are well known in the Northern Irish food circles. They developed their award-winning business North Coast Smokehouse over 6 years ago, selling their beech smoked organic salmon from Glenarm in addition to their smoked trout, Lough Neagh Pollen and range of gourmet salt and pepper.

These products are used extensively in restaurants, hotels, guest houses and cafes across the North Coast and the couple sell directly through their Economusee micro smokery in Ballycastle and at the many markets and festivals as part of the Naturally North Coast Market.

Covid19 resulted in 98% of their customers having to close and as a small family run business they needed to be decisive and shut down production.

Fortunately they had a stock of their smoked salt, smoked black pepper and smoked dulse but they were faced with the challenges of getting these products to their customers without risking a breach to the regulations whilst keeping themselves and their children safe.

They developed a postal pouch which makes delivery by post easy and cost-effective and will continue to develop this side of their business going forward.

They have taken a positive outlook to the cessation of production as a unique opportunity to review their current business model and they have enjoyed spending more time with their twin boys, and of course the other lockdown challenges such as homeschooling, DIY and baking sourdough.

Fortunately Ruairidh, Melanie and their two boys are musically gifted and they have taken the opportunity to spend time playing their instruments together and are thoroughly enjoying time which has been difficult to find in the past.

To hear this talented couple play a unique piece they researched and rehearsed especially for the Virtual Bushmills Banquet, tune into the Causeway Coast Community Facebook Page on Friday 12 June 2020 at 7pm.

To purchase their salt which has been described as ‘magic dust’ you can purchase from their website www.northcoastsmokehouse.comor via the Naturally North Coast and Glens or Taste Causeway E Shops.
