The Northern Trust has responded following suggestions by a local Councillor that the maternity unit at Causeway Hospital which had been transferred to Antrim Area Hospital due to COVID-19 will not be returning.
In a facebook post last night SDLP Stephanie Quigley said that it had been brought to her attention ‘from a variety of reliable sources’ that the paediatrics and maternity provision would not be returning. The Councillor went onto say that ‘the move was meant to be a temporary one under the critical care surge plan, but is now concerned the move has been made permanent without any public consultation.’
In a statement this morning a spokesperson for the Northern trust said :
“The official position of the Northern Trust remains that no long-term final decision in relation to paediatrics and maternity provision at Causeway will be made without a rigorous assessment, taking account of all relevant issues, and with any proposed changes being subject to full public consultation.”
Commenting on the Northern Trust’s response, MLA Maurice Bradley said :
“It is good that the Northern Trust position has not changed as far as consultation is concerned.
I had contacted Pam Cameron MLA, Chair of the Health Committee last night and received assurances that there was no substance to the facbeook post.
In April, as part of the Covid 19 surge planning process and in line with regional guidance, the Trust centralised inpatient paediatric and neonatal services at Antrim Area Hospital and nothing has changed since I wrote to the Trust at the beginning of lockdown.”
