Peacock Motion supporting victims of Mother and Baby Home Scandal across the island of Ireland supported at Council
Sinn Féin Councillor Leanne Peacocks’ Motion supporting the victims of the Mother and Baby home scandal across the island of Ireland has passed at full Council meeting.
Cllr Peacock said, “ I brought a motion to the December Full Council meeting supporting the plight of all those mothers and children who are victims and survivors of Mother and Baby homes in Ireland.”
“The Government in the South shamelessly sealed the findings of the report into this heinous scandal. Victims and Survivors deserve their stories to be heard, they deserve access to their records and they deserve truth and justice.”
“The horrors endured by victims and survivors of Mother and Baby homes extends across the length and breadth of this island and there has never been proper investigation into the abuses committed within Mother and Baby homes in the north.”
“This motion committed Causeway Coast and Glens Council to written to An Taoiseach requesting that the findings of the Mother and Baby Home report is published as soon as possible including the details of the experiences of victims and survivors, that victims and survivors are given full access to their records complying with GDPR, that the government put a range of supports in place for victims and survivors and continues to engage with them on the institutional trauma that they suffered as they put in place a national archive of the records. This motion further commits Causeway Coast and Glens Council to write to the executive calling on them to initiate a public inquiry into the heinous actions against women and their children in mother and baby homes in the north.”
“These homes and the treatment of women and children in establishments across this island casts a dark and painful shadow and was shamelessly hidden for many years. These women and their children deserve support, acknowledgement and compassion. I welcome that this motion passed and commit my continued support to all of those victims and survivors.”
