People In Causeway Coast Area Are Invited To Sign Up For The Big Lunch This June!

2 Mins read

The Eden Project and the National Lottery are inviting people in Antrim area to mark the 1st and 2nd of June in calendars and make The Big Lunch 2019 their New Year’s resolution for their community.

On The Big Lunch day, millions of people will be coming together to share food, have fun and get to know each other better. Grainne McCloskey, Northern Ireland manager of Eden Project Communities, hopes people in every village, town and city will celebrate community with The Big Lunch 2019.

She said: “We are inviting people in and around Coleraine to take the initiative and get the conversation started now in January, just by getting your free Big Lunch pack for your own street or group and inviting folk to save the date for The Big Lunch 2019 – first weekend of June.”

Grainne said: “Last year over 600 communities in Northern Ireland joined in with Big Lunch day to celebrate friendship, kindness and community. In 2019 we are encouraging ordinary people like you to organise a small get together to bring happiness to your neighbourhood. It can really lift the mood of your whole community – and if enough of them happen on the first weekend in June – together we could lift the mood of the whole country.”

“All it takes is for one person in the community to get the ball rolling by inviting some neighbours to come together on Big Lunch weekend,” said Grainne. “It’s that simple, but the impact can be profound, especially to neighbours who may be feeling the effects of loneliness behind closed doors. Don’t hold back out of shyness or fear of the unknown, we would ask you to make it your resolution to join in and bring people together where you live.”

Since it started in 2009, The Big Lunch has been making big differences all across the UK. People feel better about where they live after being part of a Big Lunch, they feel less lonely, are happier and have confidence to do more in their community. Research in 2018 found that 4.5million people who went to a Big Lunch made new friends and a whopping 4.8 million said they believe their Big Lunch helped their neighbours feel less lonely. Over 5 million people who took part last year said The Big Lunch creates stronger communities. The Big Lunch is an idea from the Eden Project made possible by the National Lottery, to inspire people to take a small step that can make a big difference.
