Pervert Exposed Himself To Teenage Shop Worker And After Following Her Home At Closing Time The Next Night Looked In Windows Of Her House

A MAN exposed himself to a teenage shop worker as she stacked shelves and the following day he followed her home after closing time and looked in the windows of her house in County Antrim, a court heard.

Artur Jozef Porowski (39), of no fixed abode, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to intentionally exposing his genitals and harassing the victim following offences which happened in early June in the Ballymoney area.
He was jailed for seven months.

A prosecutor said that on June 3 this year, the teenager who has only just turned 17, was approached by the defendant who attempted to talk to her without success. The victim moved to the rear of the shop to stack shelves and Porowski exposed himself through an open zip.

The next day at 10pm the victim was helping to lock up the shop and as she started to walk home the defendant followed her. She waved down a car and the occupants drove alongside her until she got home.

She told her parents what happened and the defendant was observed looking in the windows. He was detained by members of the public until police arrived.

During a police interview Porowski initially denied intentionally exposing himself and said he may not have done up his zip after going to the toilet but then admitted the offence was “for his own personal pleasure”.

He had also initially denied deliberately trailing the victim to her home saying he was out for a walk. Defence barrister Francis Rafferty said the defendant had only arrived in Northern Ireland from Poland a couple of days before the offences as he had a short term work contract lined up.

After the work fell through, the barrister said Porowski “decided to lose himself in alcohol” and the defendant could offer no explanation for his behaviour towards the teenager.

Porowski had been in custody on remand since June 3.

Added Mr Rafferty: “He wishes to put this whole sorry episode behind him”.

The lawyer said Porowski wished to apologise to his victim for his “disgraceful behaviour which goes far beyond The Pale” and will be returning to Poland when his sentence is complete.

Deputy District Judge Brian Archer said Porowski’s behaviour was “absolutely horrific”. He said the victim had only turned 17 and not only did the defendant expose himself to her at her workplace, “which I’m sure was very scary”, but he had targeted her the next day by following her home.

The judge said Porowski had given no explanation other than having some “perverse intention”.

“Thankfully, she didn’t come to any further harm,” added the judge, as well as jailing the defendant, put him on the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years and imposed a two year Restraining Order.
