Councillors last week at a meeting delayed plans to revamp Ramore Head Recreation grounds.
Speaking to Causeway Coast Community this morning Councillor Richard Holmes said “Portrush needs significant investment in leisure facilities for both locals and tourists alike. With such a large sum of ratepayers money required, it is important that we get it right. Councillors decided to postpone a decision to allow time for further discussions and to ensure we get it right.
Due to underinvestment Portrush is left with facilities such as the bowling green Pavilion which is no longer fit for purpose. It is easy to say that it shouldn’t have got to this state and council workers have patched it up in recent years. But the time for patch up solutions is long since past. We need investment.
We have 12 tarmac tennis courts which are under used but no 3G pitch. We have a relatively poor children’s play area and no urban sports resource.
It will take time, proper consideration, a detailed investment plan and the cash to back it up to turn Portrush into the premier attraction for locals and tourists. This is a very important decision for councillors and we must get it right.”
