Councillor Stevenson, seconded by Alderman Campbell have proposed a notice of motion on the ownership of Edward Street Social Centre in Ballymoney which will be discussed at Full council next Tuesday evening.
The notice of motion reads “That this Council officially takes on the ownership of Edward Street Social Centre and that, as finance permits, it carries out remedial work to bring it up to a standard that complies with health and safety and building regulations, enhancing its kitchen, toilet facilities, heating and interior.
That Council continues to run the facility in the same manner it has over the past 34 years.”
Last year UUP Councillor Darryl Wilson backed by the group party submitted the same notice of motion which was unsuccessful.
In a statement this morning Councillor Darryl Wilson said “I’m absolutely astounded and surprised this morning to learn that the local DUP have submitted a notice of motion to council to see council take ownership of Edward Street Social centre.
Youll all remember that 6 months ago I submitted a motion backed by the UUP group to do exactly the SAME… My motion was unsuccessful as members of the SDLP, SF and the DUP voted AGINST it…
Playing politics with the lives of local community groups such as the evergreen club and gateway club is just not on at all.
I will be more than interested to see how this plays out in the coming months…. Watch this space”
