Police attended incident and then smelt cannabis

POLICE attended an incident and when they spoke to a Cloughmills man at his address they detected a smell of cannabis and found 40 grammes of the Class B drug with an estimated street value of £400.

Samuel McGavock (46), of Culcrum Road, had the offence detected on May 6 this year, Coleraine Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

The defendant pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and told police he was addicted to the drug which was for his own personal use.

The court heard the defendant had suffered a very serious back injury and after prescribed medicinal cannabis was stopped he replaced it with his own.

McGavock had a caution from 2017 for cultivating cannabis.

He was fined £500 for the latest offence.
