Police on patrol in Portrush saw a man was staggering before he got on a 50cc motorbike and after driving a short distance the rider then “stumbled” from the machine, Coleraine Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

Conrad McCorriston (22), of Hopefield Gardens, Portrush, had the offence detected at 12.30am on Sunday February 25 this year at Glenmanus Road in the town.

The defendant, a factory worker, admitted a charge of driving with excess alcohol in his breath.

He had a reading of 73, with the legal limit being 35 micrograms of alcohol for every 100 millilitres of breath.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said the defendant had consumed some drink and had been at his father’s house.

The lawyer said his client then made a “foolish decision” to drive the short distance on a “moped”and had only gone “around the corner”.

The defendant was banned from driving for a year and fined £250.
