Ahead of the August bank holiday weekend, the Police Service is urging drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians to take extra care on the roads.

Inspector Paul Patton said: “The bank holiday always sees an uplift in traffic, especially to popular destinations such as our North Coast.

“We are working to manage traffic issues and will have dedicated resources in the Portrush area on Sunday, from early on.

“Working with partners, we will do all we can to minimise disruption and keep traffic moving; however, delays are always inevitable.”

Inspector Patton is appealing to visitors to:

· Plan your journey. Check traffic and travel information to help make your journey hassle-free.

· Show respect for local residents by being considerate about where you park.

· Make good use of public transport.

He added: “Motorists also need to be mindful that there will be more pedestrians out and about, so please be aware of others. We’d ask drivers to slow down, and don’t be distracted by friends or mobile phones.

“Never drink and drive. If you take the risk of driving after drinking, you can expect to be detected by police. We want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe weekend.”
