POLICE went to speak to a man at the Simon Community hostel in Coleraine in relation to a bench warrant and an officer was then kicked on the thigh and in his groin.
Ronan Hamilton (28), with an address listed as as Lodge Road in Coleraine, was at the town’s Magistrates Court on Monday via video link from Maghaberry Prison.
He pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer on February 23 this year.
A prosecutor said when police first spoke to the defendant on the date in question he had been aggressive and refused to co-operate and attempted to damage handcuffs. Limb restraints then had to be used.
When cautioned he said he was “sorry”.
Defence barrister Alan Stewart said the defendant had a “significant history” of mental health and ‘substance’ issues.
The lawyer said the defendant had had a case at Craigavon Court but was unable to attend because he had no money to travel.
The court was told that when police came to arrest the defendant he was “a bit nonplussed”.
He was ordered to do 75 hours of Community Service.
