A proposal for a new residential development in Portstewart that will include social housing has been welcomed by MLA Maurice Bradley.
A pre planning consultation was held in Flowerfield last week in relation to the proposal which could see around 70 social houses built on lands north of 191 Coleraine Road, Portstewart.
MLA Bradley said: “There is a vital need for social housing in the Coleraine area.
“My constituency office deals with housing issues on a daily basis.
“It is evident that there is not enough social housing stock in the area to deal with the demand, “said Bradley.
“Under Thatcher, many living in housing estates took advantage of the Right to Buy scheme, my own family included.
“Sadly, we are seeing the repercussions of this now – the slowdown in building social homes means that now there are more people than homes available.
“People are being forced into private rental.
“Private rental in many incidents forces people into accommodation they cannot afford, leading to all sorts of debt problems.
“Any development within the Causeway Coast and Glens area that includes social housing must be welcomed,” said Bradley.
