POLICE asked a man to give an explanation for having cannabis and he replied: “Can you explain how Santa Claus comes down the chimney?”
The comment was made by Ryan Brady (19), of no fixed abode, when cannabis was found at Mount Street Mews in Coleraine. The defendant appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday and admitted a charge of possessing Class B drugs.
The court heard £45 worth of cannabis was found in a drawer and in a pocket.
A prosecutor said when interviewed Brady was uncooperative with police and when asked to give an explanation about the drugs he asked the PSNI officer if they could explain how Father Christmas fitted into chimneys.
Defence solicitor Keith Kyle said the defendant had “mental health difficulties” and was estranged from his family in the mid-Ulster area. The lawyer added that, no doubt, taking cannabis was not helping the defendant.
Brady was fined £100.
