Public confidence in the Assembly can only be restored on the basis of Equality – Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said.
As the talks process nears conclusion Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has said that the Assembly can only function if it functions on the basis of Equality and can deliver for all citizens of the North.
Sinn Féin want to be in Government. We have proven that over the past 10 years and more. We want to deliver and work in a proper partnership with Unionism. We are not seeking new agreements nor compromises. We are seeking what the DUP and the British Government had previously agreed to but have so far failed to implement.
“This is a very reasonable requirement. People deserve to have an Assembly that functions for and on behalf of everyone. This is what the DUP have so far failed to grasp. Martin McGuinness brought Stormont down as a result of the arrogance of the DUP, as a result of alleged DUP corruption in RHI, as a result of the DUP complete ignorance towards Irish culture, and Irish citizens and because of the DUPs attitude towards equality. Until that changes the same lack of public confidence in Stormont remains.
“These are the issues which need to be dealt with if we are to take this opportunity to fix what is broken and to move forward.”
