The car park at Ballinrees Reservoir has closed.
There was an outcry last month when a notice at the site revealed that the car park would close on April 1.
The picturesque site on the outskirts of Coleraine is a popular spot for dog walkers, anglers, runners and nature lovers.
Over 600 people have now signed an online petition calling on NI Water to keep the site open.
Following numerous calls from constituents, MLA Maurice Bradley wrote to NI Water asking if improvements could be made to make the area safer for traffic.
Today (Wednesday), a spokesperson for NI Water informed the MLA that following legal advice they have decided to close the car park.
“I am disappointed at this decision, and I know that many others will be too.
“This area is used daily by runners, dog walkers and nature enthusiasts – the closure of the car park really makes it out of bounds now for everyone.
“I have requested a site meeting with NI Water Chief Executive Sara Venning as I feel that small improvements could be made to make it safer for drivers to access and exit the car park.
“I fully understand the issue from NI Water’s point of view – that they will be held responsible if there is an incident at the site, however I believe that consultation with the PSNI and Transport NI could resolve this issue,” said Bradley.
