A man has been banned from the roads for two months and fined £150 for driving home from the North West 200 at 82mph while an ‘R’ driver.
Niall Butcher, of Mount Eden, Limavady, pleaded guilty to exceeding the 45mph limit at Dunhill Road, Coleraine, on May 17 this year.
Coleraine Magistrates Court, on July 8, heard how the 20-year-old construction worker had already three points on his licence.
Butcher’s solicitor described him as “a very pleasant and hard-working young man” and recalled how he had been driving back home with his girlfriend after attending the NW200 when he ended up on the wrong side of the law.
Butcher had pulled out to overtake slow moving traffic after being “put under pressure” by a driver tailgating him and been detected after speeding up, the lawyer claimed.
Imposing a ban, District Judge Liam McNally told Butcher he wanted “to drive home that you can’t drive on roads at that speed, particularly when you are a restricted driver” and inexperienced.
