Two men stole sausages in a shoplifting raid before cooking them that night with rice and gravy, a court heard on Monday.
Ronald David Hazlett (52), of Circular Road, Coleraine, and Aidan McMullan (37), of Glebe Avenue in the town, each pleaded guilty to theft in relation to the offence which happened at a Spar shop at Millburn Road, Coleraine, on April 8 this year.
Meanwhile, on June 25 this year, McMullan was arrested after drinking cider outside public toilets in Coleraine and on the way to a custody suite he urinated on three occasions inside a police van which had to be taken off the road.
It cost £67 to clean the vehicle.
Defence barrister Ben Thompson said both men had “difficulties” and McMullan was an alcoholic.
Deputy District Judge Paul Conway said although it was not a high value theft both defendants had lengthy records.
He said Hazlett was “something of a bit of a menace to society in terms of your high volume of offending at low scale”.
Hazlett was given a three months jail term, suspended for two years.
The judge said McMullan had also committed many low level offences and put him on Probation for 18 months with conditions including getting addiction counselling.
