Sinn Féin Councillor Cara McShane will travel to Amed, Diyarbakir, Turkey, at the request of the ‘Free Women’s Congress’ (KJA), to speak at their ‘Extraordinary Congress’ on 20th November. Women representatives from throughout the international community will also be present.
The Turkish Government’s State of Emergency, initiated immediately after the coup in July this year, has targeted politicians, journalists, academics, trade unionists and activists who are demanding a democratic resolution to the Kurdish issue.
In advance of her visit Cara McShane said:
“Sinn Féin is extremely concerned at the political situation in Turkey.
“It appears the Turkish Government is using the current situation to achieve its long-term goal of silencing any independent or critical voices in the country.
“Oppressive measures against democratically elected representatives, particularly the pro Kurdish HDP, who are the third largest party in Turkey, sets a very dangerous precedent and raises serious questions about the nature of democracy in Turkey.
“The international community needs to speak out in opposition to any type of repression.
“I will use my presence in Amed to express Sinn Féin’s solidarity with the Kurdish people, and in particular the situation of women, in their struggle for democratic rights.”
