Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has urged people going on foreign holidays this summer to check their Irish passports to make sure they are still valid.

Mr.McGuigan said:

“My office is signing on average 30-40 Irish passports every week at the minute. However I am regularly contacted by constituents who have holidays booked and then discover closer to the time of travel that their passports have expired or that they cannot find them.

“I would urge everybody who is planning to travel or is considering booking a holiday to check the validity of their passports in the first instance.

“There is now the opportunity to renew your Irish passport online which has a 16 working day turnaround but for children and first time applicants I would suggest applying at least 6 weeks in advance of travel.

“People should feel free to contact my office or they can get more information at www.dfa.ie/passportonline
