Stabbing Accused Was ‘Unlawfully At Large’

A man accused of stabbing a man in Coleraine was ‘unlawfully at large’ over the Christmas period but his lawyer said prison would have been more comfortable than sleeping on the floor of friend’s houses.

The lawyer told Coleraine Magistrates Court on January 28: “It wasn’t the case he was living the life of Riley whilst police were looking for him”.

Ryan Millen (20), of Boyne Row in Upperlands, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent on October 6 last year

He appeared at court on January 28 via video link from Hydebank Prison and it was heard that after being ‘unlawfully at large’ he was arrested on January 3.
At court on January 28, police objected to him getting bail saying he had breached bail conditions on “numerous occasions”

The defence lawyer said the bail breaches were accepted and said his client had displayed “immaturity” regarding bail.

Previous courts heard a man from the Ballymoney area received “quite significant injuries” after being stabbed eleven times in Coleraine last October.

A police officer previously said Millen claimed he had been assaulted by the injured man and another male and that as he had “feared for his life” he had acted in “self-defence”.
District Judge Liam McNally refused bail and the case was adjourned.
