Cllr Richard Holmes has welcomed backing from council for his proposal to automatically retest those retailers found to have been selling cigarettes to children.
Council officers regularly conduct test purchase exercises and the vast majority of retailers have proved to be compliant. The very few who have sold cigarettes illegally to children have received written warnings from council.
Cllr Holmes proposed that those retailers who have not been compliant are automatically retested for a twelve month period.
“Currently there is no automatic retesting in place and, with the large number of retailers who sell cigarettes across the Borough, the chances of a retailer being tested again are low. Retailers who do sell to children will now be retested automatically for a twelve month period and it is hoped this will lead to a change in custom and practice by those in question.
“Smoking causes much harm in our society and anything which helps to stop children taking up smoking is to be welcomed.”
