Stroke NI has launched a report revealing that half of all stroke survivors in Northern Ireland feel abandoned when they leave hospital and are unable to make a full recovery due to lack of rehabilitation and on-going support.
Claire Sugden MLA says “Nearly 2000 people in this constituency have suffered a stroke and almost 70,000 are living with high blood pressure – a major risk factor for stroke. Given our ageing population, unless this is tackled, it is an issue that is only going to get worse”.
“I am disappointed to hear that stroke survivors in this area feel less supported than those in other parts of NI. In particular, they feel the lack of physiotherapy and language therapy together with gaps in emotional support. I will be following this up with both the Chief Executive of the Northern Trust and with the Department of Health to ensure that people living in this constituency are supported to recover from stroke. “
