North West 200

Claire Sugden, Independent MLA for East Londonderry has welcomed funding from the Executive for improvements to safety measures at the annual North West 200 Motorbike Races.

MLA Sugden said : “I welcome £124,000 of extra funding from the Executive to improve safety measures at the North West 200.

Road racing is part of our heritage on the North Coast; thousands enjoy the experience every year. The North West makes a big contribution to our tourism economy and to promoting Northern Ireland as an excellent venue for international sporting events.

However, road racing is not without risks. Unfortunately, in recent years, there have been incidents where the safety of competitors and spectators has been compromised.

This extra funding will help to minimise risk by purchasing safety equipment, improving the paddocks area and installing a new warning light system. Investment will enable everyone to enjoy the sport in a safer environment.

I am pleased that these safety measures will be shared by other event organisers in the Causeway area and I look forward to seeing the benefits of this. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty and brimming with tourism potential which we must continue to develop.”
