A spokesperson for Coleraine Coastguard said “At 1130 approx on Sunday 19th February, Coastguard Rescue Officers from Coleraine and PSNI personnel were tasked to the Whiterocks Beach Portrush, following a 999 call to CGOC Belfast Coastguard, reporting a child being swept out to sea.
The 12 year old boy had been body-boarding with his family when he had been caught in a rip current and carried away from the shore. Two quick-thinking surfers immediately went to his assistance and brought him to safety.
Appropriate safety advice was given by the Coastguard Team on scene.”
