A TRAINEE firefighter has been banned from driving for a year after being found slumped over the steering wheel of a car at Coleraine Rugby Club.
Luke Curry (24), of Heather Drive in Eglinton, was detected on the morning of July 14 this year and at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in blood.
A prosecutor said the defendant, who had a previously clear record, was found slumped over the wheel of a vehicle by the Ambulance Service on July 14.
The keys were in the vehicle and the defendant was drifting in and out of sleep in the rear of an ambulance and and that stage was incapable of giving a sample to police.
A later sample gave a reading of an 110 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood with the legal limit being 80.
A defence lawyer said the defendant had been at a bar the night before and after going back to a friend’s house had slept for four or five hours.
As well as the one year ban District Judge Mark McGarrity also fined the defendant £200.
