Uninsured driver’s ‘nerves got the better of him’

A man whose “nerves got the better of him” made a sharp manoeuvre after passing a police patrol and when officers spoke to him it emerged he was driving without a licence and insurance in Coleraine.

Scott Gilmore, a student, of Strand Park, Cloughmills, appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court on July 8 and has been fined £300 and received eight penalty points.

The court heard how 19-year-old Gilmore was driving a Ford Kuga out of the area of the KFC in Coleraine on May 10 and had passed police and changed lanes a number of times before taking a sharp left.

When police saw the vehicle a short time later the defendant was in the back seat.

He told police “nerves got the better of him”.

In Gilmore’s defence, his legal representative said a woman with the defendant at the time of the offences had taken ill and asked him to get behind the wheel. She had already appeared in court in connection with the case.

Gilmore, who had panicked when he spotted police, had never been in trouble before and is hoping to learn to drive.
