Unionist politicians need to do more to end toxic bonfires. – McGuigan

Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has called on elected Unionist politicians to show leadership and help end;

“The annual display of sectarian and anti-social behaviour that exists at far too many 11th night bonfires”

Mr. McGuigan continued

“This isn’t a Republican attack on anyone’s cultural, rather an appeal to common sense and decency.

“Too many bonfires across North Antrim last night suffered from the toxic fumes from the illegal burning of large quantities of tyres, and unfortunately too many suffered from the toxic sectarian nature of burning flags, effigies and posters.

“This is a hate crime and I have reported a number of these incidents to the PSNI for investigation. Unfortunately in some instances Unionist Elected representatives stood and looked on, endorsing this kind of behaviour”

“I’m sorry, but illegally burning tyres and vile acts of sectarianism isn’t culture and shouldn’t be accepted as such from within any community”
