Following the recent debacle around Sunday car parking charges and council procedures the Ulster Unionist Party have expressed their dismay at the way the entire episode has been handled.
Group Leader Norman Hillis said: “Genuine public concerns have been raised around Sunday car parking charges and these could and should have been dealt with in a proper way through council. Rather than chasing cheap headlines and subverting the democratic decision making process all members have a duty to respect the structure of council.
“Over recent weeks items such as car parking charges have been raised through the wrong committee with absolutely no power to take decisions on the matter. Minutes have been released, seemingly against legal opinion and a sordid blame game has been kicked off in the press question the commitment of hard working councillors of the utmost integrity.
“When, as councillors, we deviate away from our internal council processes we erode the very foundation that the council is built upon.”
