The ‘Old Mill’, as it is known locally, a hub for the community, in Cloughmills has been vandalised and described as ‘the worst they ever have experienced”.
A spokesperson for Cloughmills Community Action Team said “On Saturday night we experienced some of the worst vandalism we have known at The Mill. The target was our yurt, the centre of much of the community activity here.
It’s where Santa comes to see the children at Christmas, it’s where we celebrate our volunteers, it’s where the toddlers at Free Range Families warm up on cold days. We have had coffee mornings, lunches and sleepovers in it. We use it as a base for training. It’s a beautiful place for telling stories, learning and sharing.
We are beginning to hear that young people were involved. All information is being passed to the police. If you know anyone who came home on Saturday night with paint or glitter on their clothes maybe you could have a conversation with them about their activities. And who that activity is harming. No one is paid to work here, we volunteer here for the good of everyone who lives in our village. We are really hurt by this and the cost of repairs and replacements will affect the activities we offer here. Please bring forward any information you have.”
Speaking to Causeway Coast Community Councillor Darryl Wilsons said ” It is shocking that some individuals would go out out of their way to cause such mindless destruction and vandalism at The Mill in Cloughmills.
The Mill is a hub that all within the community use for various projects. I would urge anyone that witnessed any suspicious activity in the area on Saturday night to come forward to the PSNI immediately!”
