Councillor McCandless has expressed his total disgust at vandalism to the Millburn Play Park. He told Causeway Coast Community “One of the swings had been vandalised in such a manner that it would have caused serious damage to any child using it, this has to be removed. The shock absorbent material in the swing area had also been vandalised and torn up.
This damage had been reported to me on Thursday evening 14/6 by a concerned parent who had visited the park that evening with his child.
On visiting the Park today I noticed that the damage to the shock absorbent material had worsened, a large area of the material had been literally ripped up and the resultant debris including stones strewn across the play area.
Speaking to members of staff from the Millburn Community Pre-school playgroup they were disappointed that their children were unable to use the area safely.
The matter has been reported to council and is on the programme for immediate repair, however I would appeal to council officers to carry out a full risk assessment and quarantine the area concerned. H.&S. should be paramount here and I would be concerned that a child could trip and fall and hurt themselves due to the damaged play area. I have appealed to them to treat this as a matter of urgency.
This play park is a valuable asset to the local community and is widely used by families. There were four grandparents with their grandchildren using the area when I visited this morning.
I would appeal to residents to notify PSNI if they notice any further damage or ASB occurring in the area.”
