EAST Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has urged people on the north coast to engage with this year’s Macmillan Cancer Coffee Morning fundraiser after the charity saw a 76% drop in sign-ups.
The Coffee Mornings have become a main feature in the charity’s national annual events calendar, last year raising £63,400 in the Causeway Coast and Glens area alone. The official date for the coffee mornings are Friday September 25, but they can be held whenever is convenient.
“Although they will now be virtual, this year’s Coffee Morning events are still going ahead,” Ms Sugden said. “Macmillan rely upon events like these to fund their essential services.
“If the expected 76% shortfall in sign-ups translates into a similar drop in money raised it will create a huge financial black hole for them.
“Despite COVID, their services and support haven’t stopped. Their work is as vital as ever – perhaps even more so because of the extra pressure on the NHS because of COVID.
“I would encourage anyone who can to sign up and get their friends and family involved.”
