While expressing gratitude that Transport NI turned out some months ago to clear up mud slides a local councillor isn’t impressed that the material is now blocking caves which visitors have a huge interest in.
Councillor Margaret Anne McKillop (SDLP) has requested the Roads Division of Transport NI to return and removed the mud which they stored at the entrances to the caves.
I was very grateful that Transport NI came to the rescue when the road was blocked by landslides and can fully understand that in an emergency it was practical to store the mud at the entrance to the caves but we are now in the visitor season and these caves are of immense interest to visitors to the Glens area and for that reason I have asked that there is an immediate clear up to put things back in order.
The Glens is a welcoming area for an increasing number of tourists both local and from all parts of the world. Great work has been done to spruce the whole area up for the new season and Transport NI has an important role in that and I appreciate all they do to get the place shipshape.
Clearing up the mud is just another chore which needs to be done and, of course, in the longer term, we need sustainable drainage systems which stop mudslides which are an ever-ending problem in the Glens of Antrim and need to be ddressed.
