Vital services at Causeway must be protected, says McCaw after short hospital stay

Alliance Councillor Chris McCaw has thanked all staff and key workers at Causeway Hospital, following a short hospital admission with an Inflammatory Bowel condition.

“Each and every one of the members of staff at our hospital does a magnificent job caring for our local community, often in very challenging circumstances. Their response to the recent pandemic has shown how vital they are to our area. I would also like to pay tribute to all those who raised funds and provided additional supplies to the hospital during the crisis.

It is important that all of the current services at the Causeway Hospital are maintained to their full extent. For example, when the Covid-19 pandemic began in Northern Ireland, a number of important cancer services and surgical procedures were transferred to the Causeway Hospital to free up space in other places. Our local A&E department, although sometimes considered to be under threat, also played a critical role in the regional response to the pandemic, as did the local Intensive Care Unit. We also need to apply pressure to get maternity services restored to the hospital as soon as possible.

This shows the importance of maintaining local acute medical services and resisting the tendency to focus services in a small number of places. The local community depends on this facility being maintained and we must all commit ourselves to do so.”
