Woman (26) allegedly had machete in a Coleraine street at 1.30 in the morning

A woman (26) accused of having a machete in a Coleraine street at 1.30 in the morning claimed she had been in a property and picked up a knife as she felt threatened by a group of people.

Nicole McBride, of Foundry Court in Coleraine, is accused of possessing an offensive weapon – a machete – in a public place and also making a threat to kill a male on July 21.

The defendant is also accused of offences at Anderson Park in Coleraine relating to the early hours of June 29 this year.

She is charged with possessing a wooden truncheon as an offensive weapon in a public place; attempting to commit grievous bodily harm on a male and female and making a threat to kill the female.

The defendant appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court where a police officer said the PSNI received a report of an assault in Anderson Park where two people alleged they had been attacked and chased by a female with a wooden stick and one received a broken tooth.

The two people named the defendant to police but officers were unable to locate her after being told she had moved out.

The officer said McBride came to police attention after 1.35am on July 21 during the alleged machete incident and she was arrested.

The policewoman said the defendant said she was not involved in the June incident saying she was in Dundalk with a friend and in relation to the July 21 incident she said she was in a property and picked up a knife as there was a group of people outside and she felt threatened.

Defence barrister Alan Stewart said McBride said she did not know the individuals who were attacked at Anderson Park and she had put forward the name of another woman who looked very similar to her who may have been the culprit.

McBride was granted bail on the sum of £500 with conditions including having no contact with the injured parties; a 10pm-8am curfew and an alcohol ban.

The case was adjourned to August 19.
